HM THEMES
Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin
But even friendship like our heroes’
Exist no more; for we’ve outgrown
All sentiments and deem men zeroes—
Except of course ourselves alone.
We all take on Napoleon’s features,
And millions of our fellow creatures
Are nothing more to us than tools…
Since feelings are for freaks and fools.

if the broadway and theatre community dislikes bootlegs so much and don’t want people filming their shows they need to work on making theatre a more accessible form of media by filming shows professionally because you know they talk a lot about being a very open welcoming community but don’t do anything to make that community welcoming to people who can’t afford to see shows or people who live in rural areas and are literally unable to attend shows at all

So lots of people have attempted to break into the threatre community with more outreach and every time they do a filmed event for PBS or for movie theatres through fathom it goes really well and actually most Broadway is filmed (as is a lot of British theatre but that mostly gets distrubuted) just nothing is ever done with it.  The tapes sit in a vault in the Lincoln Center Library untouched unless you have a note from god saying you need to see the production for your thesis.

No, the problem isn’t that theatre isn’t filmed. It’s that fucking Actor’s Equity the broadway actor’s union won’t let them get distribution deals because it’s not written into the actors contracts and nor will they consent to write it into their contracts.

Theatre is great. Theatre access is really fucking important. And Broadway is dying not because no one wants to see theatre but because no one can afford to. $180 for an Orchestra seat limits the viewing of your shows to people with that sort of disposable income and it limits the run of your show to how long people are willing to keep paying that.

Broadway is overpriced and refuses to change or expand and as someone who saw her first show for her fourth birthday and has lived in New York city and loved New York theatre her entire life, watching the things she loves waste away because of its own ridiculous excess and bottom line and classist bullshit is really fucking depressing.

mainly reblogging because of the excellent post that michele did, but also to agree that the cost of theatre is a major deterrent for many. kevin spacey, the artistic director of one of the best london theatres, has been part of a campaign to make theatre accessible and cheaper so that audiences can be diverse. i believe the phrase he used was something about not wanting audiences to be an “elitist club.” since he took over as artistic director the old vic has had some incredibly productions with world-class actors with ample amounts of low-price tickets. i am incredibly lucky to have seen kim cattrall perform in a tennesse williams play for only £12, for example. it’s just an absolute shame that there’s not more of these schemes, with ticket prices going up and up.

i’d like to see more of this from other west end and broadway venues

also just taking a moment to highlight the great work done by organisations such as digital theatre. would love to see more of this from the west end and broadway.

I don’t want to jinx it but

way to go Jersey Boys movie!! This is how you adapt a musical!!!!!!

Dolls have given us an unrealistic image of women.

For example, I found out Russian women do not contain smaller Russian women inside them.

There must always be a Stark in Winterfell. Until I return that will be you. You are not to leave the castle walls while we are gone, do you understand? Listen to Maester Luwin. Look after your little brother.
